This is one of the most honest conversations I have with homeowners, and one of the most important.
The real answer: it depends.
I’ve seen air conditioners last 10 years and I’ve seen them go 25. There’s no guarantee on either end. A properly sized, properly installed central AC in a Northern Utah home, with reasonable filter maintenance, will typically last 15 to 20 years before major component failures.
What shortens that lifespan:
- Oversized systems that short-cycle constantly wear out faster
- Chronic dirty filters making the system work harder than it should
- Systems installed on ductwork that doesn’t fit them properly
- Deferred maintenance when warning signs appear
- Poor original installation
What extends it:
- Right-sized equipment from the start
- Clean filters and reasonable maintenance
- Addressing small problems before they become big ones
If your system is under 10 years old, repair almost always makes more sense than replacement unless the repair cost is catastrophically high. If it’s 15+ years and you’re facing a major repair, that’s when the conversation gets more nuanced — and I’ll always walk you through it honestly.
